LUKE 1977 is an independently owned, design led UK mens fashion brand with a tight distribution policy, and is only found in selected stores. Van Mildert is proud to be one such store stocking this edgy, detailed and ultimately practical interpretation on contemporary menswear. Taking inspiration from all the people that surround him, Luke's range has all the components of the modern lad, a gentleman, a working class hero & a bit of a rogue.

Luke Roper (co-founder of Luke 1977) was born in Walsall, and the son of a talented wedding dressmaker. At the age of twelve Luke was already adept at using a sewing machine and  soon became interested in the whole process behind producing garments. At fifteen years old, Luke was making shirts for his friends. After leaving school Luke enrolled in a fashion and textiles course at his local Walsall College and, in 1997,  got a place at Central Saint Martin’s College of Fashion in London where he began a 3-year specialist menswear design degree. 

During the 3 years that Luke was doing his degree he got more involved in traditional tailoring techniques which inspired him to begin making suits. Having continued making clothes for his friends, there was now a real following for Lukes clothing creations from a variety of people. After his graduation Luke took the position of junior designer with a major brand. The idea was that Luke1977 would develop his skills and have a deeper understanding of the textiles industry. In May 2001, after only 6 months Luke joined forces with his best friends Simon & Deborah Poole and the Luke 1977 clothing label was created.
