In their latest video, the team speak to Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer Christopher Boyes about his work on The Avengers. In such an epic action film, the sound obviously plays a very important role, and this video looks behind the scenes explaining how some of it was created.

Vidal Sassoon may well have been a household name, but how many of us actually realise the importance of this guy in the evolution of women’s fashion. Rising to fame in sixties, Sassoon pioneered ‘wash and wear’ cuts meaning that women no longer needed to visit the hairdresser three or four times a week to have their hair meticulously curled, teased and set. Along with the miniskirt, Sassoon’s salons helped define a decade with his popular ‘bobbed’ styles remaining as relevant today as they were when they were first worn by the likes of Twiggy and Mary Quant.

With St George’s Day this Monday, we thought we’d bring you something inherently British to end this week. Whilst recipes for ‘Steak and Kidney Pie’ and ‘Toad in the Hole’ were both contenders, we couldn’t really see George being able to defeat a dragon on a belly full of Bakewell tart, or a slice of Victoria sandwich. Keeping it simple, this recipe for posh ‘Bangers and Mash’ adds an extra dimension with the addition of Stilton elevating the humble potato to a creamier, richer, more indulgent meal that will leave you ready to defeat even the most fearsome of beasts.

California based artist Randy Noborikawa is one of the those talented guys who can do most things better than us. Whilst many artists will focus on a particular medium or style, Randy works in neon, fine art painting, Lenticular painting, graphics, and other mixed-media projects. We particularly like his lenticular works which display two paintings together depending on the viewing angle – the Saints & Sinners series changing between images of a nun and a nude. We feature quite a few videos on our Sunday newsletter promoting the various facets of craftsmanship, but what sets this one apart from the competition is that it features a British craftsman! Sebastian Cox is a furniture maker from Lincolnshire who is making a name for himself, not only with his designs, but his approach to their manufacture using local, sustainable, timbers. At a time when the media is often accused of painting a gloomy image of younger people today, this video should be celebrated as a shining example of what is great about our country. Whilst no parent in their right mind should promote playing with food, Raphaël Pluvinage and Marianne Cauvard have created what can only be described as either the weirdest musical instrument on the planet, or the most fun you could possibly have at a kid’s birthday party. Noisy Jelly is a prototype ‘board game’ using different coloured moulded jellies to create different sounds. The board acts like a sensor and the variations of the shape, their salt concentration, the distance and strength of the finger contact are detected and transform into an audio signal. You don’t believe me… check out the video, it’s surreal!

Written by the London based design studio Intercity, Rad Rides takes us back to our childhood with a look through the history of the BMX. From freestylist Woody Itson’s legendary 1985 gold Hutch Trick Star to Jim Bauer’s colourful hand-painted tiles on his 2006 Metal Rebel Contender, the book explores not only the design of the bikes, but the aesthetics which are often as important as the mechanics.
